Bentley has a new approach to product design.
In 2022, Bentley launched their Studio, modelled after an interior design studio, where external inspiration and influence are invited to intertwine with in-house expertise to develop flooring ranges.
Modern Curator 1 is a significant collection, in part because it is the first outcome of Bentley’s new collaboration process.
The collection is based on the notion that we all curate our own lives where we can, and acknowledges that interior designers are doing so for us in the spaces we inhabit, combining their choice of form, function and aesthetics. The diversity of thought and ideas can be where the beauty lies, Vicki de Vuono, vice president of marketing and product development for Bentley, explains. “With Modern Curator, we’re capturing the nuances of varying views, and combining and interpreting them in new, engaging ways for today’s commercial designers and interiors.”
The three original Modern Curator Collection No. 1 patterns are the first of what will be a series of collections within the Modern Curator portfolio that define this fresh approach to how Bentley Mills collaborates, designs, and develops products. 2023 sees the addition of a fourth design to complete this stage in the Collection.
Moody and a little edgy, Modern Curator 1’s four distinct designs have presence on their own or sit beautifully together. There is nuance in the palette and a partnership of softer to stronger play of pattern, giving options for shifting between the three looks to delineate purpose and mood within a single space, or within different zones.
Modern Curator plays extremely well with Bentley’s Daytripper Collection, allowing designers to really have fun with a variety of patterns from subtle to bold.
THE FOUR DESIGNS IN MODERN CURATOR 1
LOOK SHARP has the more finely composed texture, a sort of ‘tweed’ vibe, and is formed and orderly with a slightly less predictable blend of soft, pooling hues and shades.
SEEING THINGS is the wild card in the trio, with stronger geometries that blend through shapes and colours.
TRAINED EYE is a clever play on perspective; within each tile there is pattern in 2 directions, evoking a basket-weave derivation, that expands to create a beautiful overall impression from a distance.
CAMERA READY has a small-scale texture that drops a fine grid on the floor, pairing beautifully with its sister patterns to support the function and flow of the space. Camera Ready is scaled to sit next to each pattern without stealing the spotlight or the budget.
