The Warehouse Group (TWG) Store Support Office in Auckland is home to more than 700 team members. The office spaces were refurbished by Unispace in 2024 to better reflect the core values of the business, facilitate a hybrid working environment and support team collaboration. Core to workplace wellness and productivity is the transformative power of biophilic design. Introducing elements such as planting and organic motifs helps to achieve these goals.
Heritage Carpets supplied 6,400m² of carpet for The Warehouse Group project. We interviewed the lead designer Vinisha Topiwala to find out more about the thinking behind the TWG fit-out.
HC: What was the overall design brief for the project?
VT: The client sought a sustainable fit-out for their headquarters that not only facilitated an Agile work environment but also embodied their company values and represented their six distinct brands. The refurbishment was designed in accordance with Green Star principles, with the goal of achieving a Green Star 4 rating.
HC: How did the carpet choice support the project goals and aesthetics?
VT: The material palette drew inspiration from the client’s brand colours, reimagined in rich earthy tones that echo New Zealand’s natural landscapes and the company’s local heritage. This theme extended to the carpet selection, where DSGN Cloud offered a pattern that is both organic and dynamic, evoking the play of dappled light and the gentle movement of clouds.
The carpet was carefully chosen to align with Greenstar sustainability goals. A single carpet type was selected for the entire open-plan space, allowing a sense of consistency and creating a more flexible environment, free from the constraints of distinct carpet zones. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes a cohesive and adaptable workspace.
HC: How did Heritage Carpets assist with the project?
VT: Heritage Carpets helped us develop carpet layouts for the large multifunctional area. TWG aimed to reflect their brand colours in the flooring design. Through a series of iterations provided by Heritage Carpets, we were able to select the ideal pattern and colour balance, ensuring the space was both visually striking and aligned with the brand’s identity.
Heritage Carpets helped us achieve our design vision while ensuring sustainability goals were met.
